Sumant Sinha: The Renewable Energy Pioneer Powering India’s Clean Future

Sumant Sinha (born 12 February 1965) is an Indian businessman. He is the chairman and CEO of ReNew, a renewable energy company, which he founded in 2011. As one of India’s most influential leaders in renewable energy, Sinha has transformed the country’s clean energy landscape and positioned ReNew as a global powerhouse in sustainable energy solutions.

From Finance to Clean Energy Leadership

Sumant Sinha was born in New Delhi as the son of Yashwant Sinha, a former Minister of Finance, and Nilima Sinha. He completed his schooling from St. Columba’s School, Delhi and his graduation in engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. Later, he earned a post graduate diploma in business management from the Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta and a Master’s in International Affairs from Columbia University.

Sumant Sinha started his career with a two-year stint at Tata Administrative Services in 1989. Thereafter, Sinha worked as an investment banker at Citicorp Securities and ING Barings in the US and the UK. He returned to India in 2002 and became the Chief Financial Officer at the Aditya Birla Group.

Building ReNew: A Renewable Energy Giant

Sumant founded ReNew in January 2011, with a vision to transform the way energy is produced and consumed in India. Since then, under his leadership, the company has grown exponentially and is today one of India’s premier renewable energy companies with an aggregate portfolio of 16.3 GW spread over more than 150 sites.

Under his leadership, ReNew has built a green portfolio of 15.6 GW, and is today an integral part of the larger global clean energy ecosystem. ReNew provides end-to-end solutions across the decarbonisation spectrum, including solar manufacturing, energy storage, green hydrogen, and carbon markets—areas that are integral to addressing climate change.

Global Recognition and Leadership

For his pioneering work, Sumant has been the recipient of several other recognitions, including the 2022 USISPF Global Leadership Award; ‘ET Energy’s Chief Executive of the Year 2022’; the ‘Economic Times Entrepreneur of the Year Award’, 2018; and ‘EY Entrepreneur of the Year’, 2017. He is the first Indian business leader to be recognised as an SDG pioneer by the United Nations.

He is member of the Board of US-India Strategic Partnership Forum. During 2022–23, he served as the President of Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM). Sumant is the chair of the board of the Rocky Mountain Institute (RMI), an independent non-profit organisation that transforms global energy systems through market-driven solutions.

Driving Global Climate Action

Sumant is also the co-chair of World Economic Forum’s CEO Climate Leaders Alliance, the largest CEO-led alliance on climate change globally. He is also a member of the board of the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) and is the founding member of the First Movers Coalition, a global initiative to decarbonize ‘hard to abate’ industrial sectors.

Sumant is a regular speaker at various international forums, such as the World Economic Forum, UNGA, UNFCCC, COP, Climate Week NY, CERA Week, and at leading global universities. He has written more than 200 opinion pieces on climate change, renewable energy, and sustainable economic growth.
