When Palki Sharma Upadhyay launched “Vantage with Palki Sharma” on Firstpost’s YouTube channel in January 2023, the show catapulted the platform from under 200,000 subscribers to over 3 million within just nine months. This remarkable achievement exemplifies how Palki Sharma Upadhyay has revolutionized journalism through her distinctive approach to global news reporting. “There’s no need to shout when you have facts,” is what Palki Sharma believes in, and her global coverage has now reached all over the world. With over two decades in journalism, she has established herself as one of India’s most respected voices in international news, consistently delivering complex geopolitical analysis with clarity and unwavering integrity.
Born on May 29, 1982, in Pilani, Rajasthan, Palki Sharma Upadhyay’s journey into journalism was anything but conventional. Journalism was never a career choice for Palki, as her father initially encouraged her to pursue medicine. However, her passion for writing during college years changed her trajectory forever. She completed her schooling at Loreto Convent, Tara Hall, Shimla, before pursuing a master’s degree in Communication and Journalism from the ICG Institute for Educational Research & Development, Jaipur, Rajasthan.
The turning point came unexpectedly during her second year of college when Palki was approached by someone from Doordarshan in 2002 with a job offer as a news anchor and reporter. This serendipitous moment launched a career that would span multiple prestigious news organizations and establish her as a formidable force in journalism. Her upbringing in a culturally rich and intellectually stimulating environment helped her develop a keen sense of curiosity and analytical thinking, which later became the foundation of her career.
Palki Sharma Upadhyay’s professional journey began at Doordarshan, India’s largest broadcasting network, in 2002 as a news anchor and reporter. Her early years involved hosting national and regional television programs while managing the crucial tasks of shortlisting, formatting, and writing current affairs stories. This foundational experience at India’s public broadcaster provided her with comprehensive training in all aspects of news production.
In 2004, she transitioned to print media, joining Hindustan Times as a Staff Writer, focusing on civic and social issues. However, her true calling remained in broadcast journalism. In 2005, she joined CNN-News18 as an anchor and Senior Editor, where she spent over a decade conducting high-profile interviews with cabinet ministers, opposition leaders, business executives, social activists, artists, authors, sports stars, and film celebrities.
The most transformative phase of her career began when she joined WION in 2019 as Managing Editor, becoming the face of the prime-time show “Gravitas”. Under her stewardship, Gravitas became synonymous with incisive international reporting and geopolitical analysis from an Indian perspective. Her coverage during major global events, including comprehensive reporting on international conflicts and diplomatic developments, established WION as a credible voice in global journalism.
Recognition for her exceptional work came through multiple prestigious awards. In 2007, she was awarded the Best News Reader Award, and she received the ‘Best International News Show’ in English award for ‘Gravitas’ at the News Broadcasting Awards (ENBA). More recently, she received the “TV Anchor of the Year” award at the IAA Leadership Awards in 2021 for her impactful work at WION.
Following her departure from WION in September 2022, Palki Sharma Upadhyay made a strategic move to Firstpost, owned by the Network18 Group. “Vantage with Palki Sharma” premiered on January 26, 2023, on the YouTube channel of Firstpost and has now become a flagship show on geopolitics and global news. The show’s success demonstrates her ability to adapt to digital platforms while maintaining the high editorial standards that define her journalism.
Her current role encompasses multiple programs beyond Vantage. She has now started two other shows: “Between the Lines” and “Flashback with Palki Sharma”, each addressing different aspects of global affairs and providing comprehensive analysis of international developments. The Firstpost team works hard putting well-researched content and shows regarding world affairs and global headlines, with Palki Sharma Upadhyay becoming the face of Firstpost, providing a platform for the Indian perspective on global affairs and geopolitics.
Her commitment to accuracy remains unwavering. “Accuracy is something that we put a premium on, and we try to double-check the information that we have. We have a solid research team, and where we do not have control ourselves, we attribute it,” Sharma revealed in an interview. This research-driven approach, balanced with timeliness and precision, has established her credibility in an era of information overload.
Demonstrating her multifaceted personality, Palki Sharma Upadhyay has successfully ventured into entrepreneurship. She is the founder of a saree brand named Revya, inspired by her passion for traditional Indian attire. This business venture reflects her deep appreciation for Indian culture and her ability to translate personal interests into successful enterprises. Her entrepreneurial spirit showcases how journalism professionals can diversify their careers while maintaining their primary professional commitments.
Her linguistic abilities further distinguish her in the international journalism landscape. She has a C1 certification in French from Alliance Française de Delhi and has professional working proficiency in the language, enabling her to access and analyze French-language sources and conduct interviews with French-speaking subjects directly.
Palki Sharma Upadhyay has consistently advocated for presenting global news through an Indian lens, challenging traditional Western narratives in international journalism. She is recognized as one of the most popular youth icons in modern journalism, inspiring a new generation of reporters to pursue fearless, fact-based reporting.
Her philosophy of storytelling extends beyond immediate news cycles. “What is your story? When you grow up and talk to your grandchildren, what’s the story you want to tell?” she asks, emphasizing the art of storytelling in the news world. This perspective has influenced how she approaches complex international stories, always seeking the human element within larger geopolitical narratives.
The international recognition of her work is evident in viewer feedback from around the globe. Comments from international viewers describe her as “a trail blazer to investigative in depth News reporting” and acknowledge her role in presenting Indian perspectives on global affairs.
In recognition of her contribution to journalism and her fearless anchoring, MIT World Peace University, Pune, conferred upon Palki Sharma Upadhyay the Bharat Asmita Jana Jagaran Shreshta Award for best use of Mass Media in February 2023. This honor reflects her significant impact on contemporary journalism and her role in elevating Indian media’s global standing.
Palki Sharma Upadhyay continues to shape international journalism through her commitment to factual reporting and innovative digital strategies, proving that authentic journalism remains the cornerstone of democratic discourse in an increasingly connected world.
