From Village Roots to Global Success
Sridhar Vembu (born 1968) is an Indian billionaire business magnate and the founder and former chief executive officer of the Zoho Corporation. According to Forbes, he is the 39th richest person in India with a net worth of $5.85 billion, as of 2024. Vembu was born in 1968 in a middle class Tamil Hindu family, in a village in Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu.
He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras in 1989, and earned his MS and PhD in Electrical Engineering degrees from Princeton University in New Jersey. Vembu launched his professional career working for Qualcomm as a wireless engineer in San Diego, California, before moving to the San Francisco Bay Area.
Building Zoho: A Technology Empire
In 1996, along with two of his brothers, Vembu founded AdventNet, a software development firm catering to network equipment providers. The company was renamed Zoho Corporation in 2009, shifting its focus to providing SaaS support for CRM services. Founded in an apartment, in 1996, Zoho now has over 15,000 employees, more than US$1 billion in annual revenues, and over 100 million users. All of this ‘bootstrapped’ as a private business, with no external or public investors.
Zoho, the Chennai-based SaaS unicorn, surpassed $1 billion in sales, generating an operating revenue of Rs 8,703 crore for FY23—up 29% from Rs 6,710 crore earned in the previous fiscal year. What makes this achievement remarkable is that Vembu built this technology giant without taking a single rupee in venture capital funding.
Revolutionary Approach to Rural Development
Sridhar Vembu is noted for taking software and product development functions from urban centres into rural villages in India. Specifically, his company, Zoho, established its offices in rural Mathalamparai, Tenkasi district, Tamil Nadu and in suburban Renigunta, Andhra Pradesh.
In 2011, Zoho opened its first rural office in Mathlamparai, Tenkasi, a newly-created district in Tamil Nadu, with six employees. At present, the office has around 500 employees. With people moving back to their hometowns amidst the pandemic, Zoho intensified its rural revival initiatives. It opened 30 satellite offices in rural and non-urban areas around the world.
Zoho Schools of Learning: Education Revolution
In 2005, he launched the Zoho University (now called Zoho Schools of Learning) programme with six rural high-school students, trained for two years in computer science, maths and communication before being absorbed into the company. Today, around 15% of Zoho’s workforce is made of ZU Graduates who benefit from the business wishing to open offices in small towns, suburbs and rural locations rather than metros.
Vembu’s commitment to societal impact goes beyond corporate success. Realizing the untapped potential in rural India, he initiated Zoho Schools and Zoho University to train young minds for the evolving challenges of the digital world. Underprivileged students, irrespective of their educational background, receive training and stipends through these programs, addressing unemployment issues in the country.
Personal Mission in Rural Education
The founder of Zoho Corporation, Sridhar Vembu who is considered a Silicon Valley star could be spotted on a bicycle in Tamil Nadu these days in his new role as a teacher. For the locals of Mathalamparai village in Tamil Nadu, he is a dedicated teacher who moves around the village and ensures that the rural kids are getting access to education.
His educational venture started six months ago as home tuition for three children. Initially, it consumed two-three hours of his free time. But now his initiative has expanded and the classes are now taken up by four teachers. All children who are getting taught by him mostly belong to families of farm labourers.
Philosophy of Simple Living and Giving Back
Despite achieving billionaire status, Sridhar Vembu remains grounded, choosing to reside in the small village of Mathalamparai in Tamil Nadu. His philosophy of simple living is a testament to his humility and values. Vembu emphasizes that setbacks are inevitable, but one can always stand again.
Sridhar Vembu and his team lead a simple life, residing in the village where their day starts at 4 AM. They engage in early morning meetings with U.S. clients, followed by leaving at 6:00 A.M. to take a refreshing bath at the local pond. In the evening, they take leisurely walks, engage in self-farming, cultivating vegetables like Bhindi and Pyaaz.
Recognition and Recent Transition
He was awarded India’s fourth highest civilian award, the Padma Shri, in 2021. He has also been selected as CNN-News18 Indian of the Year 2022. He was also appointed to the National Security Advisory Board (NSAB) of India in 2021.
Recently, Sridhar Vembu has stepped down from his role as Chief Executive Officer. Vembu, who built the SaaS giant in 1996, will take on the role of Chief Scientist, where he will lead Zoho’s deep R&D initiatives and pursue his personal rural development mission.
